Helping Children Feel Safe, Supported and Connected During the Summer Months

Summer can be a season of fun, rest and new memories. For many families, it brings more time outside, a break from school routines and opportunities to spend time together.

But for children and families involved in foster care, adoption, kinship care or family preservation, summer can also bring changes that feel overwhelming. A shift in schedule, less structure, new activities or more time at home can create stress, especially for children who rely on consistency to feel safe.

FOSTER PARENT TIP

You do not need a big activity to build trust with a foster child. Some of the strongest connections happen during everyday routines like cooking dinner, taking a walk or riding in the car. Use these moments to listen, ask open-ended questions and simply enjoy being together.

TRAINING CORNER

School’s out and summer is here! As a new foster or adoptive parent, the next few months may seem daunting. Who will provide childcare while you work? What activities should you sign your child up for? School provides a structure for kids, and for many children, structure can be important. Without it, children may experience anxiety and exhibit more severe behaviors. For children impacted by trauma, it’s normal for behavior challenges to increase when routines are disrupted. FOSTER FAMILY OF THE MONTH

The Limones family is a kinship foster-to-adopt home that has been licensed since July 2023. Since shortly after becoming licensed, the Limones have cared for their niece and nephews and officially adopted them on July 15, 2026 — three long awaited years later! They have been strong advocates for the children in their care, providing a loving environment where they can grow. All three children and the family have remained actively involved in family events, sports and church activities. Thank you to the Limones for your continued dedication to the children in your care!
