May is Foster Care Month

RECOGNIZING THE PEOPLE WHO SHOW UP FOR CHILDREN EVERY DAY

 

May is National Foster Care Month, a time to raise awareness about the needs of children in foster care and to recognize the individuals and families who step in to support them. Across the United States, more than 390,000 children are in foster care at any given time. Each of these children has a unique story, and each one benefits from the presence of caring, consistent adults.

As school wraps up and summer gets closer, kids may feel excited, anxious or a mix of both. Keeping routines steady and making space for conversations about what’s ahead can help children feel more secure through the transition.
TRAINING CORNER
Mother’s Day can be a tricky time for many children in foster care. This is because it’s common for them to have experienced some sense of loss or abandonment during their lives. In some cases, their mother or parents may have died or have serious illnesses so they cannot take care of the child anymore. However, in other cases, the mother or parents may have abandoned the child or are simply unable to take care of them any longer.

FOSTER FAMILY OF THE MONTH

 

The Cooper family provides commitment and care to each child that comes to their home, whether they stay long term or not. They remain deeply involved in the daily lives of their placements, consistently going above and beyond to meet each child’s individual needs. Recently, they welcomed a sibling set of five in addition to their original two placements, demonstrating incredible compassion and dedication. The Coopers prioritize keeping the children active, connected to their community, and supported with the services they need to thrive. They stay connected and support the biological families, even past reunification.
