A Day to Remember: Destiny's Red Carpet Welcome

at Paul Mitchell School

This month, we're delighted to bring you an uplifting story of warmth, generosity, and dreams coming true. Meet Destiny, a 14-year-old girl in foster care, patiently waiting to be adopted. Destiny got the chance to visit to Paul Mitchell - The School Dallas, and it was nothing short of magical, starting with a glamorous "red carpet" welcome. The school was decorated with "Welcome" signs and touching handwritten messages from students and instructors. As Destiny made her way down the runway to a chorus of cheers and applause, she was treated to personalized beauty care, insightful tips from her devoted cosmetologist, Tiana, and a luxurious basket of hair products.

The highlight of her day was a surprise full scholarship from the Turnage family, opening doors to a bright future at any Paul Mitchell school. Overwhelmed by the kindness and love she received, Destiny celebrated this unforgettable day as the best of her life. We hope her story inspires you as much as it inspired us.

All of this was made possible through a partnership between EMPOWER and the local Dallas news station WFAA, which provides spotlight moments for children awaiting adoption in hopes of finding their forever homes.

Our dedicated adoption teams, led by Cheryl Batiste and Kerry Garcia (both pictured above), along with Adoption Specialists: Esther Rocha, Jazzmyne Woodson, Kimberly Francese, Raquel Vasquez, and Shavondra Triplett, played a crucial role in making the Embrace Child to Family Connection event a success.

The event featured over 30 children, represented through portraits, videos, and display tables that showcased their unique personalities, interests, and dreams. Unlike traditional "match events," the children were not present, but their stories were beautifully conveyed by their case managers and CASA volunteers who were there to share firsthand experiences about each child.

Our adoption team worked tirelessly, traveling countless miles and hours to create detailed profiles, collect photos, and talk to the children about their wishes. They collaborated closely with the children's case teams to advocate for these young individuals to potential adoptive families.

PAL’s Aging Out!

Dallas College, in collaboration with the EMPOWER's Preparation for Adult Living (PAL), hosted an Aging Out Resource Fair on June 1st. The event catered to all foster youth and former foster youth, aiming to provide essential support and resources for young people transitioning into adulthood. The fair featured various vendors, booths, and workshops that offered valuable tools and information on education, vocational training, and housing opportunities.

Attendees had access to skill-building activities, networking opportunities, and even one-on-one assistance. The fair aimed to empower young people to transition into adulthood successfully by providing them with the information, resources, and support they need to navigate the challenges of independent living.
